New Discovery: Style Stalker

My littlest sis is down visiting from Cairns during her school holidays, and I took her shopping in Paddington last week, in a failed attempt to find her these cute Melissa flats (I know, I know, too much Melissa talk. I would stop if they would stop making such damn desirable shoes!):

Luckily though, the trip was not for nothing - anyone familiar with Brisbane knows Paddington is a very fashionable part of town, with many clothing boutiques lining the streets. Unfortunately these boutiques (even the op shops) are quite pricey, so it's not exactly a shopping spree kind of place. Or at least, not for me. I'm a bit of a scrooge when it comes to spending money on clothes - I have to really, really like something to spend more than $100 on a single item. However we did find a few great pieces, in particular, this Military T-Shirt from Australian label Style Stalker:

This tank is really versatile - the shirt fabric means you could dress it down, say by wearing it with skinny jeans and converse sneakers, but the epaulet detail means that you could also dress it up with a cute highwaisted skirt. You know what else I like about this top? The price - it sells for AUD$59 at Style Stalker's online store.

Upon making the singlet discovery, I did what I always do when I find a piece of clothing I like - I looked up the label online. And while not everything of theirs is quite my taste (studded leggings with mesh insert panels? No thank you) they do have some cute pieces at reasonable prices, so I will definitely be keeping my eye on their work.

Well we are only into the first few days of Spring down here in Australia, but already it's hot and sunny like summer. As Eugenie and I are both big lovers of retro fashion, particularly the pinup era, I thought I'd do a write up of retro fashions available for this Australian summer. However there is soooo much great stuff around, I couldn't cram it all into one post. Seeing as cataloging by colour is just as good as any other arbitrary method of cohesion, I've decided every day I'll be posting 'A Very Retro Summer in...' until I run out of wedges on the colour wheel.

First up is sunny, happy yellow. Yellow can be a hard colour to pull off - it is after all, the colour of jaundice. If you don't think you can do a whole outfit, choose a statement piece like a bangle, badge or shoes.

Fonts and Kerns and Ampersands, Oh My!

Typography is, as our good friends at Wikipedia explain, "the art and technique of arranging type, type design, and modifying type glyphs". In other words, it's making cool fonts and arranging words on a page (or screen) in a way that looks good. Typography designers and fans are passionate folk, and fair enough - once you get around the shallow view that "eh, it's just letters and shit", there is a lot to appreciate in a well-designed typeface.

To kick things off is a true heavyweight on today's type scene, Alex Trochut. With clients ranging from The Rolling Stones and i-D Magazine to Cadbury and even British Airways, his work is eclectic, eye-catching and thoroughly modern:

On the other end of the spectrum is the divine Yulia Brodskaya, whose painstaking paper creations are a prime example of what can happen when great art and great type collide:

Sigh, so pretty! However, my favourite graphic designers at the moment is Jessica Hische. She creates creates enchanting typefaces and designs by hand and computer. Take a look and try not to fall in love:

Some Type Of Wonderful is an annual celebration celebrating the best of international typography. While the STW10 prints are yet to be unveiled, this is an example of last years' lovely work (featuring Jesse Hora, Hellovon & Luke Lucas) :

Miranda July is Super Cool and We Should be Friends

I really like Miranda July. She reminds me of a friend of mine from uni, Ria. They are both just super cool, without trying to be, and without affectation. And I always realise how uncool I am when I compare myself with either of them and their achievements. I would hate them for this, except Miranda July seems really sweet, and I know Ria is, so instead I feel happily envious for them and a little sad for me.
The below images come from a Vice magazine story where July posed as background extras from classic movies like Grease. This series is classic, quirky July and I love it.

However out of all of them, I think this last pair is my favourite. The image of July moves past the recreation hook and is a beautiful, haunting image in its own right.

MoovBoots Sale

MoovBoots are "sheepskin lined luxury wellingtons" created by sisterly duo Meisha Strykowski and Bryony Proctor (collectively known as MoovCulture). It's quite a lovely idea, combining the warming qualities of ugg boots with the waterproof nature of gumboots. The MoovBoots are currently available in four prints/colours, and you can choose between mid calf or tall boots. My favourite is The Alice, with Lemon Tea not far behind (and both in tall).

As to the sale thing I subtly alluded to in my title - they are having a 60% off sale at their online store right now. That means that those lovely tall boots above, previously $280AUD, are now only $112AUD. If I was younger I would say OMG!!! but I am mature and hold little fondness for such abbreviations, so you shan't be seeing such language from me. Nonetheless, that's a pretty amazing discount and a number of sizes are already sold out, so skaddle over there before they are all gone.

All Of Our Lives have found a cult following amongst the young and trendy inhabitants of our fair nation. Caitlin Shearer's Bleeding Knees and Blushing Damsels

Courtesy of the dust storm Eugenie alluded to in the previous post, everything in our house is now finely coated in powdery red dust. Thanks years long drought!
I was out and about during the worst of it and wow, it was amazing, it came on so quickly. I'm really enjoying a photo set Quest Newspapers have posted of the Wynnum seaside. The sepia tint of the dust goes really well with the general nostalgic dagginess that is Wynnum. These photos brought back lots of memories - when we were kids our family used to go there for fish and chips and rollerskating. I haven't been there for a long time, but by the looks of these photos, nothing much has changed since I was a little girl.

Summer of Colour!

As dust storms paint the entire city an ugly shade of rust, I'm going to take it upon myself to brighten things up with a cornucopia of colour! So, to start things off...

Shoes! Irregular Choice is responsible for some rather, uh "quirky" creations, but these are hands-down bitchin'. I'm a sucker for anything retro-space-age and these are no exception. I found these via makeup mogul Doe Deere's blog, which is worth a look if you enjoy feeling pangs of envy. In all honesty though, Ms Deere is a sweet slip of a gal who can rock pretty much any colour combination with her flaming red hair. Behold:

She is just lovely, no? I'm a bit wary of mixing too many colours at once, but she makes it work.

The only thing better than watermelon? A colourful slice of Watermelon pie. Fun summer dessert indeed!

Melissa Shoes

Melissa is an Australian based company and their plastic shoes are just devine. A few friends of mine have Melissa shoes and say they are super comfy - not really the first adjective I would go to when discussing plastic shoes, but apparently Melissa have achieved the improbable. They collaborate a lot with other well known designers, and the results are often bright, happy shoes that you want to wear day in, day out.

If I could afford to buy a pair in every one of those colours, I would do it in a heartbeat. The Mary Jane style ($190AUD) is from their ongoing collaboration with Vivienne Westwood. Earlier this year there was a bit of a web frenzy over the Lady Dragon Love Heart heels ($185 AUD) - very popular as wedding shoes for the quirky bride.

I strongly recommend checking out their website and online store as there's something for everyone in there - from strappy sandals, to flats and high heels. All made from plastic and all perfectly adorable.

Oh, super frustration. I just wrote a post about Vivien Cheng's fantastic range of reworked vintage handbags, and in my infinite wisdom I also just deleted it. Grah!

While I work myself up to writing that whole damn post again, let's continue on the reworked vintage theme and check out some reworked China plates by New Zealander Trixie Delicious. When she becomes super famous, Australia will claim her as our own, a la Russell Crowe.

The first one sums up my general feeling towards all technology right now, and the second one refers to how I feel towards me. Maybe I should buy it and display it on my china hutch.

Love the juxtaposition of the nanna sweetness with her handpainted words, some of which many nannas would probably pretend to be ignorant of. Not mine though, she's a feisty old bird.

Tattoo Porn

I love tattoos. Adore them. Can't get enough of them. I am constantly ogling perfect strangers in the street to get a closer look at their tattoos, which probably makes me seem a wee bit creepy, but not as creepy as I could be if I also tried to surreptiously take photos. Social taboos and general decency prevent me from becoming a fully-fledged tattoo stalker, but thankfully the internet can help me out here.

When I was younger, I was very much under the impression that the only people who got inked were bikies, juvenile delinquents or prison inmates. Oh, not to mention people with a penchant for shaded portraits of celebrities and Jesus.

Yep, he's laughing right at you, kid.

Sexy

Needless to say I was not a fan, and by the time the tribal armband/Japanese character/tramp-stamp-fest of 1990 onwards hit its stride, most tattoos that my young self saw were pretty hideous and nothing to aspire to. However, both the quality of the inks and the artists themselves have increased exponentially over the years. Anyone can get anything tattooed anywhere (for a price), and while this has lead to a strangely high number of men decorating themselves with stoned copulating unicorns riding a rainbow of ecstasy (or shitting out a rainbow of ecstasy, you know, whatever floats yer boat) it also means that people are getting some pretty gorgeous and alternative work done. So enough with the bad - we all know what a bad tattoo looks like - let's get on to the awesome.

Scott Harrison is fast becoming one of my favourite tattoo artists, due in no small part to amazing pieces such as these (I want me some hinges like #2). He works out of Portland, Oregon so for now I'll just have to admire from afar.

Kiwi lass Rose Hardy has some super incredible work with a cool original vibe. She occasionally works down at Chapel Tattoo in Melbourne, so fingers crossed I can book in with her one day. (That chestpiece? HOLY SHIT I WANT IT NOW.)

Stephen Colbert's Twitter feed is really very funny, just like everything else he does in life.

Highlights include:

Speaking of Stephen Colbert, he is totally tearing it up at the moment. The current political climate in America, especially the way the hard-core neo-cons are just losing their minds has given The Colbert Report so much material. It has allowed Stephen and his writers to let Stephen Colbert - the character - and his paranoia and ignorance loose, and boy is he crazy. In particular I love their take on Glenn Beck, a right-wing, conspiracy theorist nutcase who refuses to accept the majority of the country he 'loves' so much really doesn't side with him, and instead is, to paraphrase Mr. Colbert, cranking up the crazy and ripping off the knob. The fact that this guy is actually given a forum to disseminate his hateful and ignorant views by a major media corporation is actually really disturbing and upsetting, but that's a whole other post for another day. And you've got to laugh, otherwise you'd be shaking with rage day in day out.
