Art by Joanna Gianulis

I have only just discovered Joanna Gianulis, a ridiculously talented illustrator who draws fragile images of children and animals. Her works often represent ideas and notions of loss, fear, innocence and danger. It's gorgeous work, and you could do worse than take a look at her website and get lost in her imagery.

Shop Profile: Black Friday's

First up, I should probably apologize for my lack of posts lately. Paloma's doing a great job of staying on top of this whole blogging business, where as I have spent the last week in a frenzy of tattoos and shopping and general laziness.

Which brings us neatly to the topic of today's post. In search of a new retro rockabilly dress, I ventured into a shop I had read about but never actually been to: Black Friday's in Sherwood. Neatly located behind True Love Tattoo on Oxley Road, Black Friday's is my Favourite. Shop. Ever. Cheesecake pin up posters adorn the walls, the wooden floors creak underfoot in a homey, comfortable way and the speakers blast the best rockabilly tunes. They stock the finest in repro (and genuine) vintage: Stop Staring, Bettie Page, Heartbreaker, Rock Steady, TUK and Pleaser Shoes, Sailor Jerry... the list goes on (they also stock pomade for the gents). For all you pin-up princesses out there, Friday's also sell hair flowers, cosmetics, jewellry and compact mirrors. I purchased a rockin little pink and black diner dress, TCB magazine and US Kustom Cars catalogue for $160. Rad? I think yes.

Run by Lauren and Dutch, the whole shop has a laid-back vibe which means you won't feel awkward coming back again in the space of about two days. (I did just that. Trust - you won't be able to resist.) Check out there Myspace here - you can also buy items online - and if you're in Brisvegas, get yourself down to Black Fridays, ASAP.

Sniffle Co.

About a week or so ago, me and my littlest sis went shopping along LaTrobe Terrace in Paddington. In an Endeavour op shop where I found an excellent Elvis tape with live performances and radio interviews for a buck, I also found an almost intimidatingly cool lady volunteering behind the counter. She was wearing this lovely lasercut brooch and so, despite the aforementioned near intimidation, I had to ask where she had got it from.

As it turns out, the brooch was by Australian accessories brand Sniffle Co. The 'Rainbow Airlines' brooch actually appears to be a bit of a departure from their usual style of cartoony, and sometimes slightly sinister characters. This is obviously the intended result - for example, the brooch below is described as a 'mounted deer brooch with dead eyes' (a pretty accurate description, I'm sure you'd agree).

They also have a great (albeit currently small) range of lasercut wooden buttons, my favourite being the teeth. I would love to have these babies on a blouse - methinks they would offset it with a little of that sinister vibe I mentioned earlier.

I'm really glad I've found this quirky Australian brand - thanks mystery op shop girl! - and I'm looking forward to seeing more of their work as it comes out, hopefully soon.

Mina Perhonen

Mina Perhonen is a really interesting and versatile Japanese fashion label by Tokyo based designer Akira Minagawa. I've had the above blouse (from the 2007 Spring/Summer collection) bookmarked as a favourite for nigh on a year now as "beautiful shirt". As a busty lass I fear I could not successfully wear it, and they don't have an online store, so I wouldn't be able to buy it even if my ladies did shrink, but I can't bring myself to delete the link. I just love everything about it - the simplicity of the cut, the sleeve detail, the crowding of the oversized buttons. He's taken a simple, familiar silhouette and created something beautiful and unique through a few key features.
This is a recurring trend throughout the Mina Perhonen collections. Mingawa often takes familiar clothing silhouettes and creates something fresh and unique through the use of innovative prints, textiles (with original fabric created for each design) and adornments.
Check out some of my other favourites, below:

The Ceremony Dress screams 'Futuristic Nanna' and I would wear it in a heartbeat (2007 - 2008 Autumn/Winter collection).

Again, an intriguing use of colour, pattern and texture in the Ballade Coat (2007 - 2008 Autumn/Winter collection).

Like I said earlier, sadly there currently is no online Mina Perhonen store, however a number of stores around the world stock the label, so check their stockists page for further information.
